Plot summary

At the seafood processing plant in a remote Irish fishing village, Aileen O'Hara works shifts beside Mary, whose son Mark drowned at sea, and Sarah Murphy, a young woman in marital trouble with her husband Francie. At Mark's funeral reception, Aileen's estranged son Brian returns after years in Australia. The family gathers: her husband Con, her daughter Erin, who has a newborn son, and Paddy, her father-in-law, in a vegetative state. Brian says little about Australia but wants to restart the family's abandoned oyster farm. With nothing of his own, he leans on Aileen, who takes oysters from the processing plant to stock his traps while Sarah watches. Francie, a seafood supplier, is angry the next day over missing oysters from his order, and Aileen puts the blame on one of the plant's lower workers.
