Plot summary

Girl rides a bus back to Golden, the small town she left behind, carrying her father's hatchet. She has come to kill CW James, the father who abused her. On the phone her mother reads her a letter from him that threatens her mother's life, and her mother says she does not need to know the return address. Girl walks into town from the highway, turning down a sheriff's offer of a ride. At the bar she finds her father's address in the phonebook, orders a drink and has a run-in with Betty. At his house she finds him already murdered by someone else. The sheriff will not take her report, so she calls her mother from the bar, saying she will find out who killed him, and her mother urges her to come home.
