Plot summary

It is 1866. James 'Doc' McCune, a young doctor, arrives in Norfork, a wooden-walled settlement in the Ozark Mountains, after his uncle Matthew McCune summons him to become the town physician. Norfork looks like a biracial utopia, and Matthew appears to run the place, though what his authority rests on is not clear. He tells his nephew that every resident knows their purpose and warns him against too much curiosity. Outside the walls, a red mist creeps through the trees before supernatural presences known as ghosts attack anyone caught outside at night. Looking for the town's previous doctor, Doc finds Annie, who lives in the woods with her brother William, who cannot speak, and she assures him that neither of them fears the ghosts.
