Plot summary
In 1979 Philip Goodman's strict Jewish father expels his sister from the family over her relationship with an Asian man. Goodman is now a professor and television presenter who exposes fraudulent psychics, work he treats as his life's mission, undoing the damage superstition once did to his family. He is invited to meet Charles Cameron, a paranormal investigator famous in the 1970s, who has been missing for decades and now lives ill and impoverished in a caravan. Cameron asks him to investigate three reported hauntings: Tony Matthews, a night watchman troubled by a girl's spirit at an abandoned asylum for women; Simon Rifkind, a teenager drawn to the occult whose car breaks down in the woods; and Mike Priddle, a City financier plagued by a poltergeist while awaiting his child's birth. Goodman believes each case has a rational explanation.

Martin Freeman, Andy Nyman and one or two others on set invented the nonexistent actor "Leonard Byrne" to convince the rest of the cast, the crew and the media that the character Charles Cameron, in truth Freeman in a prosthetic mask, was a real person.- The exterior of the pub "The 10th Number", where Philip Goodman meets Tony Matthews, was the Merry Monk at 109 Kirkstall Hill in Leeds, and the pub was demolished in 2017.
