Plot summary
A mother recounts to her sleeping son the summer of 1944 in the Italian town where she grew up, near the end of World War II. It is the night of San Lorenzo, when shooting stars are said to grant wishes. A man marries his pregnant fiancée in the church, and the bride's family celebrate with some unease, wary of the Germans and their Fascist allies. The German front is retreating, yet the troops intend to blow up buildings in the town and have ordered the residents to gather in the church. About half of them stay, placing their trust there. The others dress in dark clothes and slip away at night, hoping to reach the American army said to be nearby. Cecilia, a young girl, is among those who leave.
