Plot summary
Dante cannot reach the light of salvation, because three wild beasts stand across the path up the mountain: Avarice, Pride and Lust. Watching this, Beatrice comes down from Paradise to Limbo and asks Virgil, a fellow poet, to save Dante from his plight. Virgil knows of a different road, and that road runs through the whole of the Inferno before it can lead anywhere near Paradise. He brings Dante to the gates of Hell, where Charon ferries souls across the river Acheron. The two then descend from circle to circle, and Dante sees the sinners and the endless punishments each of them suffers, each torment matched to the wrong the soul committed. Some of the faces are familiar from his life in Florence.
