Plot summary
The film stays close to Lady Gaga across the year in which she finishes and promotes her fifth album, Joanne, and gets set for the Super Bowl LI halftime show. Cameras stay with her during the desert shoot for the "Perfect Illusion" video, as she gets a Joanne tattoo, and on a visit to a store to check the record's placement; the album also turns up online without her say. Chronic pain, later named as fibromyalgia, breaks into her routines, rehearsals and time in the studio, and she seeks treatment and physical therapy. She talks about loneliness, fame and womanhood, and plays the album's title song for her grandmother.

- Lady Gaga chose not to watch the documentary until its Toronto International Film Festival premiere, giving director Chris Moukarbel creative freedom in shaping the final film; one of the few things she specifically wanted included was her chronic pain, hoping viewers with similar conditions would feel less alone.
- Despite Live Nation's financial backing, director Chris Moukarbel said much of the production was paid for out of his own pocket, because the access he needed required a minimal setup, often just himself and a camera, with extra crew only for events like the Super Bowl.
- The Super Bowl LI halftime show was not part of the original plan, but became the film's natural ending once Gaga learned during filming that she had been booked; Moukarbel liked its live, high-pressure format as a way to bookend the documentary.
