Plot summary
At North Gateway High in suburban California, Tanner Daniels and his best friend Brent Van Camp are both closeted. Brent intends to come out at prom because teen magazines have declared a gay best friend the season's trend. Fawcett Brooks, Caprice Winters and 'Shley Osgoode each rule a feuding clique. When the Gay-Straight Alliance faces shutdown for lack of a gay member, Soledad Braunstein uses a hook-up app to find one, tracks Tanner down and forces him to come out at school. The three most popular girls, hoping a gay best friend will secure a prom queen crown, now want Tanner for themselves.

- George Northy wrote the screenplay while working at an ad agency, and it became a finalist in both Outfest's Screenwriting Lab and NewFest's NewDraft contest; Guinevere Turner then sent it to director Darren Stein.
- The thirteen-track G.B.F. soundtrack was scheduled to include new songs by JoJo and Michael J. Willett, but after the track listing was announced both were left off the final cut for unknown reasons.
