Plot summary

Fiona has received a life-changing health diagnosis, and she hosts a New Year's Eve reunion at her home for her closest female friends, all fellow actors, hoping the evening will ease her isolation and anxiety. Before her guests arrive she stands at the mirror, repeating affirmations. The group includes newly successful Lucinda, her best friend Summer, who has a crush on Lucinda, young Zoe, and Sofia, their acting teacher. Lucinda brings her new British boyfriend, Taron, who flirts with whoever he can. The happy reunion gets off to a rocky start, and Zoe performs a monologue for the group, looking for Sofia's approval.

Cast

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Friends, Foes & Fireworks (2018)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Friends, Foes & Fireworks was shot in a single night: production began at 4pm on New Year's Eve and wrapped at 8am on New Year's Day at the apartment of Fiona, played by Lara Deam, after a 14-hour shoot gave the directors all the footage they needed.
  • When the friends split at midnight in the story, the crew split too, filming separate characters in different locations at the same time: Sarah Jayne Portelli and DOP Stephen Ramplin took one group of actors, while Ivan Malekin and a production assistant took another.
  • Dan Hill was a late addition as Taron, replacing an actor who pulled out because he was unsure he could handle the film's improvisation.
  • Dan Hill was kept away from the rest of the cast during rehearsal, apart from his onscreen girlfriend Lucinda, played by Whitney Duff, so that when he arrived at the party in the film's opening scene most of the cast met him for the first time.
  • The actors had no dialogue to learn: they worked from detailed outlines with scene beats and character backgrounds, and spent a month-long rehearsal improvising scenarios from the characters' pasts to build the group's history.
  • To get a fly-on-the-wall feel, the directors shot with two cameras in the run-and-gun style common to documentaries.
