Plot summary
William Bonin is a Vietnam veteran who drives a delivery route in Southern California. Away from work and from his ailing mother, he tortures and murders young men, aided by an occultist, Vernon Butts. Together they carry out a series of killings in Orange County before moving to Los Angeles. By 1980 the two have grown strained with each other, and Bonin turns to an unsure young man, Kyle Peterson, as a new partner in his crimes. Bonin shows Kyle pictures of what he and Vern have done, and Kyle comes to share Bonin's belief that only the fittest survive, listening to his stories of the Vietnam War. Under that tutelage Kyle grows more confident, wins a promotion at his job and patches things up with his girlfriend, Lisa. Vern resents the place Kyle has taken beside Bonin.
