Plot summary
Mara and Jo Mitchel have stayed close since middle school, though the two women differ in nearly everything. Jo works as a social worker and lives freewheeling; when a crisis of her own making hits, she calls Mara, whose part is to comfort her and pull her out of it. Mara writes and spends her days as a teacher's aide, work that leaves her a little frustrated, and the excitement in her week tends to arrive with Jo's calls. Jo is dismissed from her job because of repeated lateness, and her life begins a downward turn of depression and drugs that Mara struggles to follow. Over ten years their paths diverge, both women passing through jobs and boyfriends.
