Wilfred Lucas
Biography
Wilfred Lucas was a Canadian American actor, director, and screenwriter who worked extensively in early Hollywood. Born in Norfolk County, Ontario, in 1871, he began as a baritone singer before moving into light and grand opera. After his 1906 role in The Chorus Lady, D. W. Griffith brought him to Biograph Studios. His film debut came in 1908 in Griffith's The Greaser's Gauntlet, and he appeared in more than 50 short films over the next two years. While still acting, he wrote scripts, starting with Sunshine Sue in 1910, and began directing in 1912 with An Outcast Among Outcasts. He later appeared in Griffith's Intolerance and became a foil for Laurel and Hardy in The Devil's Brother and A Chump at Oxford. He made the transition from silent films to sound and worked for more than three decades, appearing in more than 375 films.
