Plot summary
A single mother and her daughter, a recovering addict, move into a house next door to a widower and his adult daughter, who has autism. The mother is Anna, and her daughter Dede is a lesbian photojournalist in recovery; the widower is Peter, and Laura is his daughter. The characters in both households are stubborn, self-destructive, and sheltered from their more creative and loving selves, held back by past regrets and by over-protectiveness. Sobriety, forgiveness, and courage are subjects the story takes up. The storytelling mixes found footage, animated passages, and in-character interviews, and it is seen through a distinctly Asian-American lens.
