Plot summary
Richard Kennington is an acclaimed pianist, and Paul Porterfield, an eighteen-year-old music student, is offered the chance to turn pages for him. Kennington has an agent and lover, Joseph Mansourian, and is drawn to Paul's youth and good looks. Kennington wants to know Paul better, but Paul's mother, Pamela, is possessive and neurotic and stands in his way. She does not know at first about the attraction and dotes on her son; Paul feels suffocated by her love.
