Biography

Paul Rhys is a Welsh actor whose work spans film, television, theater and radio. He trained at RADA on a Bernard Shaw Scholarship and won the William Pole prize and Bancroft Gold Medal. Early stage work included Glasgow Citizens Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and early film work included Julien Temple's Absolute Beginners (1986). He played Theo van Gogh in Robert Altman's Vincent & Theo (1990) and Sydney Chaplin in Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1992), then appeared in From Hell (2001), Food of Love (2002) and Hellraiser: Deader (2005). Later films include Ridley Scott's Napoleon (2023), as Talleyrand, and Emerald Fennell's Saltburn (2023). On television he has played Aldrich Ames, King George III and Sir John Conroy, among other roles. His stage credits include Bent opposite Ian McKellen, Measure for Measure, for which he won a Critics' Circle Theatre Award, and King Lear, which brought an Olivier nomination. He has also performed in more than a hundred BBC radio plays.
