Plot summary
Since her mother died, Carrie McLaughlin has lived in Pittsburgh with her grandmother. When her grandmother moves to a nursing home, Carrie goes to Wyoming to live with Hank, the rancher father she barely knows, and she resists country life. The ranch keeps Flicka, the black mustang of Carrie's cousin Katy; the horse is wild, and the ranchers say she misses Katy. A prairie rattlesnake attacks Carrie, Flicka saves her, and the girl and the horse grow close. Carrie also meets Jake, a ranch hand who wants a career in country music, and Amy Walker, whose father owns a neighboring ranch. Amy likes Jake as well, and the two girls clash at once.
