Plot summary

Laura dances in New York and is married to a wealthy businessman, Steven. After falling ill following a performance she thinks she may be pregnant, and on her way home a woman across from her on the subway holds a baby, then vanishes, leaving the child behind; the bundle holds only a doll. That night she and Steven share their news: his partnership at the firm and her pregnancy. They settle in the countryside, where the sound of a crying baby haunts her. An emergency C-section brings a daughter, and in the nursery she cannot feel the happiness of the mothers around her. At home she has insomnia and struggles to pump breast milk while Steven works long hours, and when Laura insists the baby hates her, he hires an au pair, Mrs. Kasperian.
