Plot summary

Three years after the events in Hope, Washington, John Rambo is held at a penal labor facility. Colonel Sam Trautman visits with an offer: reports claim American prisoners of war are still held in Vietnam, and the government has approved a solo infiltration to confirm them. Rambo accepts, hoping for a presidential pardon that is not guaranteed. In Thailand he meets Marshall Murdock, the bureaucrat in charge, who orders him to photograph a suspected camp and to avoid enemy personnel and any rescue. Trautman is the only person on the operation Rambo trusts. Dropped into the jungle, Rambo loses most of his equipment when his parachute snags, keeping a knife and a bow. His contact, the intelligence agent Co Bao, finds river pirates to move them upriver.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • James Cameron wrote the first draft of the Rambo sequel, titled First Blood II: The Mission, at the same time as he was writing The Terminator and Aliens. He got the job on a recommendation from David Giler, who had done uncredited work on the first film.
  • Credit for the script became a quarrel: Kevin Jarre insisted almost nothing of his original treatment survived, while James Cameron said he had written only the action and that Sylvester Stallone, who did the final draft, supplied the politics.
  • Producers wanted John Travolta as a sidekick for Rambo on the rescue mission, but Sylvester Stallone killed the idea. Lee Marvin was offered the part of Marshall Roger Murdock and turned it down, so Charles Napier played it.
  • The shoot in Guerrero, Mexico cost a life: special effects man Clifford P. Wenger Jr. lost his footing during one of the film's waterfall explosions and fell to his death.
  • Producer Mario Kassar put a teaser into 3,000 theaters in the summer of 1984, more than a year before release and months before any footage of the film existed, under the title First Blood Part II: The Mission.
  • Opening in 2,074 cinemas on 22 May 1985, it became the first film ever released to more than 2,000 theaters in the United States, and took $20.2 million that weekend.
  • The videotape sold 425,000 copies on its first day in 1986, a record at the time for a cassette priced at $79.95, beating the 410,000 managed by Ghostbusters.
  • SNK built the 1986 arcade game Ikari Warriors as an official Rambo adaptation but could not get the rights, so it was renamed after part of the film's Japanese title, Rambo: Ikari no Dasshutsu.
