Ansel Roth writes about cults and gives lectures on them. His hotel room was free for one night only, so he checks out with stolen towels and batteries. A heckler disrupts his presentation and beats him over his part in a cult member's suicide. Evelyn and Paul ask him to sign his book for their daughter Claire, who has joined a group called Faults. Roth turns them down. Mick, who works for Roth's manager Terry, brings a letter: Terry has dropped him and wants his debts within a week. The couple offer breakfast, and Roth agrees to listen.
