Plot summary
Peter Reynolds is a proctologist, divorced, with a teenage son, Ethan, who shows him little respect. His fraternal twin Kyle makes money from a deal that puts his face on bottles of hot sauce, and Peter resents how easy his brother's life has been. At their mother Helen's wedding, Peter notices a television actor who resembles the man he and Kyle were told was their father. Helen admits she lied, and names a retired football player she once dated. The brothers set out to find him.

- After poor test screenings, Father Figures' ending was reshot in Rutledge, Georgia, in April 2017 to make it funnier; the new footage included a scene of Owen Wilson's Kyle being chased by a field hockey team, seen only in trailers.
- During the reshoots, Bill Irwin was removed from Father Figures as Dr. Tinkler and replaced by Christopher Walken.
- Jason Sudeikis was originally attached to star before Owen Wilson and Ed Helms were cast as the two brothers on July 15, 2015.
- On September 15, 2017, the film was renamed from Bastards to Father Figures because television advertisers would not play ads for a film with profanity in its title.
