Plot summary
At the Falcon Academy of Athletics in Brookfall, Massachusetts, seven students are training for a Nationals competition: Annie Rivers, Sue Allen Baines, Nancy Wilson and Frank Agee in gymnastics, Joe Ward and Phil Dandridge in track and field, and Lynn Fox in swimming. Dr. Jordine and his assistant Diane run the athletes' medical program, dosing them with experimental steroids. Diane tells him the practice is unethical; Jordine replies that the research has been his life's work. Then a figure in a black tracksuit whose face is hidden strikes Nancy with a javelin, and the competitors begin to disappear. Annie, balancing her studies and her training, leans on her boyfriend Phil as the two try to find out what is happening to their teammates.
