Plot summary
Fanny Hill is born to poor but honest parents in Lancashire, and smallpox orphans her. Alone on the streets with no one to turn to, she meets her friend Esther Davies at her parents' grave, and Esther brings her to London and to Mrs. Brown, who keeps a house of working girls. Fanny agrees to the arrangement without understanding it. Phoebe is among the girls, and Fanny's first client is Mr. Croft, a rich man who is nothing like the young, handsome gentleman she had pictured. At a party that afternoon she draws attention as the only girl still holding her maidenhead, and Charles Standing, seeing her there, offers to take her away.

- Director James Hawes shot five to eight minutes of screentime a day on Fanny Hill, double the norm, because the budget was half what it would have been if the show had aired on BBC One.
- Seventy actresses auditioned for the role of Fanny, whittled down to eight and then two. Rebecca Night, who was in the first group of actresses seen for the part, bought the novel as soon as she learned she had an audition.
- Alex Robertson was already in mind for the part of Charles, but his casting was only confirmed once Rebecca Night was cast as Fanny. He went through two auditions, and producers noted he had the right chemistry with Night.
