Plot summary
Peggy Heller, a twenty-two-year-old caregiver, has just married Robert Heller and moves with him to a boys' boarding school south of London, where he has taken a teaching job. The night before they leave the city, a man with a prosthetic hand breaks into her home and attacks her. She travels with Robert the next morning, and the couple settles into a chalet across the road from the school, run by headmaster Michael Carmichael. While Robert is at work, Peggy hears boys' voices in classrooms she finds empty, and Michael shows her around the building. Back at the chalet she is attacked again; Robert doubts her account and worries about her state of mind, and calls off their dinner with the Carmichaels. Driving the grounds, they meet Molly Carmichael, the headmaster's wife, out hunting rabbits; Peggy finds her stand-offish.
