Plot summary
Grace Tang, raised in Chinatown, works as a mergers and acquisitions associate at a New York bank, and she wants acceptance among the Upper East Side elite. Her first invitation to a high-end party for an opera company's Junior Committee ends with her taken for a Hong Kong heiress who shares her name. Grace tries to correct the error, and her resolve weakens after she is introduced to Andrew James Barrington Jr., who is dating Kay Douglas, a member of the committee. Andrew works for the New York State Attorney General in Manhattan and is pursuing a case against Chinatown sweatshops, one of which employs Grace's mother. Andrew's father, a prominent attorney, is involved in a buyout of a fashion company that Grace's bank is handling.

- The film was originally meant to be Tony Award-winning actor B.D. Wong's feature directorial debut, but he left very late in production over "artistic differences" and, despite still playing a major supporting role, asked to have his name completely removed from the credits after writer Fay Ann Lee took over directing.
- One Hollywood producer would only buy Fay Ann Lee's script if she changed the heroine's ethnicity to Latino American, for a star like Jennifer Lopez; Lee refused and spent four years raising the budget to produce the film herself.
- A tourist from Austria saw Falling for Grace in San Francisco in 2007 and lobbied successfully for the cinema chain Cineplexx and others to tour the film as a sneak preview in nine theaters in Austria and one in Germany.
- After Wong's departure, Fay Ann Lee re-wrote and re-shot over 60 pages of the script, mentored by Jim Taylor, the Oscar winning writer of Sideways.
