Plot summary
David Sabah grows up in a conservative Syrian Jewish community in 1960s Brooklyn, where his love of baseball runs against his parents' wishes. His mother and father, Eli and Esther, came home from Israel after taking their son Morris for psychiatric treatment; Morris, who has schizophrenia, keeps to his room and his classical music. Their older daughter Vivian has already left, so the parents hold tighter to David and his sister Rita. David plays with his friends and Coach Nicki Giambi, and at seventeen he begins a romance with Natalie, an Italian girl five years older. Vivian offers him a place to live and a chance to play baseball in California, and he has to decide whether to stay with his family or go.
