Plot summary
Sebastián, a Mexican director, travels with his producer Costa, the cast and the crew to Cochabamba, Bolivia, to make a historical drama about Christopher Columbus's first voyage, Spanish authority over the native people of Hispaniola, and Hatuey's rebellion. Costa picked the location because the budget is tight and local extras can be hired cheaply. Hundreds of Bolivians answer the open casting call. Sebastián gives the part of Hatuey to Daniel, a local man whose fire suits the role; Daniel's daughter Belén also wins a role. Costa objects to hiring Daniel, who is a leading voice in the demonstrations against the privatization of the city's water supply.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Even the Rain (2010)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film is based on the 2000 Cochabamba Water War, when protests over water privatisation drove the engineering company Bechtel out of Bolivia. By 2005, half of Cochabamba's 855,000 residents still had no water, and the rest got service for as little as three hours a day.
- The production used more than 4,000 extras, about 300 of them indigenous people, plus a crew of 130 and more than 70 locations, nearly all of them outdoors.
- Spain chose Even the Rain over Daniel Monzón's Cell 211, which stars the same actor Luis Tosar, as its entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. It reached the nine-film shortlist in January 2011 but missed the final five.
