Plot summary
Tagalog revolutionaries have attacked a Spanish garrison at Baler, and Spain answers by sending a battalion to take the village back. Captain Enrique de las Morenas and Lieutenant Martín Cerezo command recruits warned that humidity, disease, typhoons and wildlife are the rebels' allies. At the San Luís Obispo de Tolosa church, Brother Carmelo reports that the rebels have gone, though Cerezo orders his men to move with care. In Baler they meet Sergeant Jimeno Costa, who survived the earlier attack, and Teresa, a villager. Among the recruits is Carlos, an artist who hopes to study at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando once the war is over. Word comes that Spain and the United States are at war and that the Spanish fleet at Cavite has been destroyed, and supplies to the battalion stop.
