Plot summary
King Charles V sends a company of Spanish soldiers into the South American jungle to find Teziutlan, the legendary city of gold, and claim it for the empire. The aging nobleman Don Gonzalo de Baztán holds the title of captain, but the veteran ensign Gorriamendi really leads, and he is hungry for gold. Grudges between the men and the dangers of the jungle divide the group, and Don Gonzalo is unpopular for ordering summary executions. Gorriamendi and the soldier Martín Dávila are rivals for Don Gonzalo's young wife, Doña Ana. A messenger brings word that the governor who authorized the expedition has been deposed, and that a second force under Captain Juan Medrano is following the company.
