Plot summary
Zama holds the post of magistrate for the Spanish Crown in a remote settlement in Argentina, while his wife and children live far away. He longs for a posting to Lerma and believes the order is close. Word travels through the town about Vicuña Porto, a bandit whom people claim to have met and beaten, though Zama pays the talk no attention. He pursues Luciana Piñares de Luenga, a wealthy married Spanish noblewoman who refuses him. At work he clashes with Ventura Prieto, an assistant magistrate who objects to the enslavement of indigenous people. Zama takes on whatever duties the governors assign him, guarding his chances of a transfer.
