Plot summary

Fifteen years after a catastrophe known as the Second Impact, giant beings called Angels attack Tokyo-3, and the paramilitary organization Nerv opposes them with Evangelion units, humanoid bio-machines that mirror on their pilots any injury the units take. Shinji Ikari, a fourteen-year-old boy, is summoned to the city by his father Gendo, Nerv's commander. He is caught in fighting between UN forces and an Angel, and Captain Misato Katsuragi pulls him out of the fight and takes him to Nerv headquarters. Gendo orders him to pilot Unit 01; Shinji gives in only when Gendo prepares the wounded pilot Rei Ayanami to go out instead. Misato becomes his guardian, and he starts at a local junior high school.

Voice actress Megumi Ogata recorded a scream for the scene in which Shinji is burned by the sixth Angel that caused a slight burn in her windpipe, and she ended her first day of recording exhausted.
Although End of Evangelion (1997) was produced by Gainax and Production I.G, Hideaki Anno held all the legal rights to the Evangelion continuation project himself, saying the original series staff were not adequately rewarded and that a new company would distribute profits more fairly.
In the CGI work on the Angel Ramiel, a rendering error reversed the reflections of its lower and upper faces; Tsurumaki left the mistake in, saying Anno would like it better that way.

Funimation issued a cease and desist order to fansubbers of Evangelion: 1.0 on behalf of Nippon TV in November 2008, along with orders concerning several other anime properties.
