Plot summary
Three years before the story opens, creatures called Reapers came up out of sinkholes and killed most of humanity. The people left alive stay at 8,000 feet or higher, heights the Reapers avoid. Will lives in Lost Gulch Refuge in Colorado with Hunter, his son, who suffers from a lung disease. Will's wife Tara died at the hands of Reapers on an expedition with Nina, a scientist, who was looking for the creatures' weaknesses. With oxygen filters for Hunter running low, Will talks Nina into a trip to Boulder and her old lab. Their friend Katie joins them.
