Did you know?!Facts and trivia about El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Bryan Cranston flew to Albuquerque on a private jet and shot all his Walter White scenes for El Camino within 36 hours, during a two-day break from starring in the Broadway production Network. He returned to New York in time to perform that same evening.
  • To keep El Camino secret, cast members wore large cloaks to hide their identities on the way to set, their characters were given code names, and when recognized in public they lied about working on the film.
  • The Breaking Bad compound set had been torn down, so El Camino rebuilt it, reusing the original cooking vessel Walter White touched before his death; Gilligan left Walt's bloody handprint on the prop as an Easter egg despite the continuity error.
  • Vince Gilligan wrote a letter from Jesse to Brock Cantillo to be read in voice-over over the final Alaska scene, but the Better Call Saul writers' room, including Peter Gould, felt it was better left to the audience's imagination, so it was cut and never recorded.
  • The vacuum repair shop set had been sold and turned into a furniture store after Breaking Bad ended, so El Camino's crew rebuilt it from scratch and used a special buyer to find identical props at flea markets and salvage areas.
  • Gilligan wanted to shoot the final Alaska scene on the Haines Highway, but it was too expensive, so the crew filmed outside Jackson, Wyoming, and used low cloud cover to hide the Grand Tetons instead of digitally removing them.
  • Gilligan achieved the handheld look of El Camino's flashbacks by placing the large Alexa 65 camera on top of a truck airbag that could be inflated and deflated between two plastic plates.
