Plot summary
Michael "Eddie" Edwards has dreamed of the Olympics since childhood. His attempt to reach the Summer Games comes to nothing, so he turns to winter skiing, where British Olympic officials judge him uncouth and turn him down. He realizes the country has entered no ski jumper in six decades and sees his opening, traveling to a West German training center at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Training alone, he clears the 15 m hill at the first attempt but injures himself trying a 40 m slope. Bronson Peary, an American who quit the sport after falling out with his mentor Warren Sharp, agrees to coach him. With little time left to qualify for the 1988 Calgary Games, the pair use unorthodox methods to sharpen his form.
