Jo Hartley
Biography
Jo Hartley is an English actress who began performing as a child in a school production of The Sound of Music and trained with the Oldham theater workshop. Born in Oldham, she left acting as a teenager for jobs at British Aerospace and Japan Airlines before returning in her mid-twenties to study method acting and Stanislavski's system at the Questors theater in Ealing. Her first film role came in 2004 in Shane Meadows's Dead Man's Shoes (2004). She played Cynthia in This Is England (2006) and appeared in The Young Victoria, Eddie the Eagle (2016) as Eddie's mother Janette, and Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018). On television she was in This Is England '86, In My Skin, After Life, Mandy, and Das Boot. For her performance as Tina in Sweetheart (2021), she was nominated for a BIFA for Best Supporting Actress. Later credits include Bank of Dave (2023), where she played Nicola, and the lead in Swede Caroline (2024).

In her mid-twenties, Hartley quit the aviation industry to become an actor. She went back to England and studied method acting and Stanislavski's system at the Questors Theatre in London, until she landed her first film role in 2004.
