Plot summary

Ed Chilton lost his mother, Mabel, a year ago, and he now keeps the family hardware store going while sharing a home with his uncle Benny, who seems glad to have his sister gone. At work one morning, a salesman called A. J. Pattle approaches Ed with an unusual proposal: he can raise Mabel from the grave, and the thousand dollars he asks for need not be paid in advance. Ed doubts him at first but agrees to the deal. Benny is troubled by it and calls the whole thing wrong. After Mabel comes back to the house, her conduct turns stranger and harder to accept, from frightening the neighbors to chasing dogs with a knife, until Ed admits that something is not right.
