Plot summary
In 1872, President Grant summons veteran Indian fighter Johnny MacKay to Washington, where he reports on the clashes among settlers, soldiers and Modoc renegades along the California-Oregon line. Grant makes him the territory's peace commissioner. Heading west, MacKay gives an escort to Nancy Meek, a retired army colonel's niece who is bound for the ranch of her aunt and uncle. At Fort Klamath he meets Toby and Manok, the adult children of an old Modoc chief, who say that a renegade leader calling himself Captain Jack is behind the killings, while most Modoc want to live in peace. Both act as go-betweens for the Modoc.
