Plot summary
In ninth-century northern Britain, the druid Brude summons the Painted tribe, slaughters the druid circle and turns the clans toward war with the kingdoms south of Hadrian's Wall. The apprentice Lorne escapes. South of the wall, Gareth wins his final trial as a fighter but gathers too little money from the peasants, so Sir Horsa withholds his knighthood and demands a hundred crowns. A peasant couple takes him in. When a meteor falls north of the wall, Gareth steals a knighted squire's sword and goes after the riches he believes it holds. The stone splits open around a dragon and nine eggs. Painted warriors arrive, and Gareth, badly wounded, saves one egg; the dragon saves his life by joining its heart to his. Brude curses the dragon and takes the eggs, and Lorne explains the bond to Gareth.
