Plot summary
Arthur Holmwood, a young lord, learns in 1899 that he has syphilis, soon after he becomes engaged to Lucy Westenra. Lucy knows nothing of his illness, and the disease means the marriage cannot be consummated. An occult group called the Brotherhood, led by Alfred Singleton, claims to know someone who can cure him, for a price. Arthur uses the firm that employs Jonathan Harker, the solicitor engaged to Lucy's friend Mina Murray, to sell properties in Transylvania to a mysterious Count Dracula. Harker travels there for the transaction. The count is a vampire some nine hundred years old, and the arrangement brings him toward England.
