Plot summary
Winter in upstate New York. Irene Morrison works as a supermarket cashier, raises two boys with her husband Steve, and hides a cocaine habit. Her eldest son, Ben, has a birthday coming and wants a snake. On Halloween, out trick-or-treating with her kids, she meets Bob, a nurse. Money runs short: at a reptile store the family cannot afford a snake, and Irene's dealer turns her away because she has not paid for weeks. She checks herself into a rehabilitation center, where she befriends Lucy and runs into Bob again. Back at the supermarket, Irene is called into the manager's office and fired. Lucy proposes they start a cleaning business together, and Irene agrees.
