Plot summary
In 2008 the Reaper virus sweeps through Scotland, killing hundreds of thousands. With no cure for the infected, the government seals the border behind a thirty-foot wall, and the quarantine holds. Three decades later Reaper appears in London, and satellite images show people alive inside the sealed zone, which points to immunity or a cure. Prime Minister John Hatcher tells Captain Nelson to send a team across the wall. Nelson chooses Major Eden Sinclair, a Scottish officer whose mother was left behind in the evacuation, her deputy Sergeant Norton, and the virologists Dr. Stirling and Dr. Talbot. They cross the wall into Glasgow to search for survivors and for Dr. Kane, a medical researcher who may have developed a cure.

- The director originally sought to bring Sean Connery out of retirement to play the warlord Marcus Kane but was unsuccessful; the part went to Malcolm McDowell, who described his character as a King Lear, while Marshall based Kane on Kurtz from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
- Marshall had seen the Aston Martin DBS V12 used in the James Bond film Casino Royale and wanted a similarly "sexy" car; since the car company did not do product placement, the filmmakers purchased three new Bentley Continental GTs for US$150,000 each.
- Director Neil Marshall lived near the ruins of Hadrian's Wall, the Roman fortification built to defend England against Scotland's tribes, and fantasised about what conditions would cause the Wall to be rebuilt, imagining a lethal virus would do it.
