Plot summary
Tanya, seventeen, lives in Los Angeles with her single mother Joan and three siblings: Kenny, Melissa and Zack. She has a summer trip to Spain planned with friends and intends to study fashion in college. An incident at work sends Joan on a business retreat, so Tanya loses the trip and Joan hires Ms. Sturak, a strict babysitter, to watch the children. Alone with them, Ms. Sturak confiscates Kenny's cigarettes and marijuana, destroys Melissa's video games, and harnesses Zack to stop his birdwatching. The children throw a house party under the pretext of bible study, and the noise wakes Ms. Sturak, who dies of a heart attack. With their summer money lost, Tanya fabricates a résumé and lands an assistant's job at a fashion company, posing as an adult.
