Plot summary
Kevin Schlieb plays a lone drum in the school marching band, where he watches Emily Spector quit after a meltdown over her clarinet. Away from band, he and his best friend Hunter Sylvester are the only students who care about metal. Hunter plays guitar, and when the school announces a Battle of the Bands, he registers the two of them and buys gear with his stepfather's credit card. Kevin drags Hunter to a party at Clay Moss's house, where Kevin drinks and flirts with Kendall Sarn and Hunter clashes with Skip. Kevin practices Hunter's playlists by ear. He notices Emily is a dedicated cellist, and the two take an interest in each other. Hunter auditions bass players for the trio and gets nowhere; he rejects Emily outright.
