Plot summary
Joe Dirt works as a janitor at a Los Angeles radio station, where shock jock Zander Kelly puts him on the air to tell his life story. Joe says the top of his skull never formed, so he wore a mullet wig. At eight he was left behind at the Grand Canyon by his parents and his sister, and he never learned his real surname. He grew up in foster homes, ran away, and landed in Silvertown, a chicken town in Idaho, where he met Brandy. Robby, the town bully, resented him. Joe sets out to find his parents.

- Roger Ebert praised Spade for taking on a different role from the ones he is normally associated with, yet still included Joe Dirt among his most hated films of all time, under the category of "alleged comedies", writing that being buried in crap is not in and of itself funny.
- Joe Dirt opened at number four in the domestic box office with $8,016,008 and reached a worldwide total of $30,987,695 from an estimated $17.7 million budget; since movies typically have to gross twice their budget due to marketing and distribution costs, it was probably a financial loss.
- In 2014, Spade revealed in a Reddit question that he was writing a sequel to Joe Dirt for Crackle, which was released in July 2015. Entertainment Weekly has noted that the film is "the first ever made-for-digital sequel".
- The film gained a cult following, with it being one of the most watched films on Crackle and leading to the development of the sequel.
