Plot summary

In a small village in the Borneo jungle, Ash Mattley runs a clinic and studies an enzyme taken from a rare beetle. Carl Wessinger, a scientist, seeks him out and collects several of the beetles with him. Wessinger then uncovers a fossil in the jungle, and the natives with him fall in fear before the creature they call Balacau. Two years later, gruesome murders plague Mattley's clinic, and the villagers hold Balacau, a creature from the region's old myths, responsible. Claire Sommers, a CIA agent, approaches Mattley and asks his help in finding Wessinger, who worked for the United States government and fell out of contact. A boy named Matzu, whose sister was one of the victims, goes with them into the jungle.
