Joel Torre
Biography
Joel Torre is a Filipino actor who started on stage as a child and became known for period and historical dramas. Born in Bacolod, Negros Occidental, Philippines, in 1961, he joined the Masskara theater group at age seven under director Peque Gallaga, and he attended the University of St. La Salle. His early screen work included a small part in Lino Brocka's Gumising ka, Maruja in 1978, and Gallaga later cast him in Oro, Plata, Mata (1982). He rose to fame in the 1980s with that film and Karnal (1983), and he later appeared in José Rizal (1998). He has received a Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival Award, three Gawad Urian prizes, and a FAMAS Award. He starred in the 1990 action drama Kunin Mo Ang Ulo ni Ismael, and in 2024 he was cast in Under A Piaya Moon.
