Plot summary
David Lurie is an ageing white professor of Romantic literature at a university in Cape Town in the years after apartheid. He has an affair with Melanie Isaacs, a student in one of his classes, and gives her a passing grade although she never took the exam. When university officials learn of the affair, they bring him before a disciplinary board. His colleagues offer him the chance to leave quietly and save face. He tells the board he is guilty while refusing to admit wrongdoing, so the board punishes him more harshly. He leaves Cape Town and takes refuge with his daughter Lucy, a farmer in the Eastern Cape. Lucy's farm manager is Petrus.
