Plot summary
Detachment follows three weeks in the life of Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who moves from school to school and never stays long enough to form a bond with students or colleagues. His new assignment is a one-month post teaching English at a high school where many students perform below grade level and classrooms fill with antagonism. In his first class he watches two students harass their classmate Meredith, and he speaks with her afterward. He then visits his grandfather, whose dementia has left him confused, at a care facility. On the bus ride home he sees Erica, a teenage runaway who has sex for money, struck by a man who will not pay her. Erica asks him for sex, and he refuses.
