Plot summary
An unknown object underwater uses a powerful electromagnetic pulse to disable an American nuclear-powered submarine. The submerged Arctic research complex Hubris sees the attack and reports temperatures in the Polaris Trench climbing fast; melting ice could flood the world's land surface. At an emergency United Nations scientific meeting, Hubris director Dr. Anne Fletcher calls for caution, while her rival Dr. Chomsky wins backing for a far more aggressive plan. Her ex-husband, Navy Captain Andy Raines, then asks Dr. Fletcher to join a follow-up expedition that includes Chomsky. The expedition flies to the North Pole.
