Plot summary
On Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, a sheriff's deputy is shot dead by a robber who had just killed a convenience store owner. The case falls to Jerry Beck, a homicide detective with a drinking problem. Going through police records, Beck turns up Bobby Burns, recently released from a four-year robbery sentence. Beck and parole officer Elliot Webley visit the Burns house and find Bobby's brother John, a college student home for the holidays, who says he has not seen him. A man runs from the house; Beck chases him down on foot. The man, a paroled friend of Bobby's, says he last saw Bobby heading for Bakersfield in a maroon Ford Ranch Wagon.

- Don Johnson's Detective Jerry Beck was based on real Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detective Jerome Beck, who sold the film rights to his life to director John Frankenheimer after meeting him and appears in the closing credits as a walk-on character named Detective John.
- Don Johnson permed his hair to play Detective Jerry Beck because the real Los Angeles homicide cop had curly hair, calling it "a very interesting choice"; he noted that perms relax after about two or three weeks.
