Plot summary
The archangel Gabriel stages Cole Porter's life as a musical as the composer nears death. Porter recalls the night he met Linda Lee Thomas, a recent divorcee, and the couple become devoted to each other. Linda knows Cole is gay. Her first husband mistreated her, and she tells Cole on their wedding day that he is entirely different. Since he loves her and is affectionate with her in public, she tolerates his outside involvements. His career flourishes, and she begins giving him an engraved Cartier cigarette case each time one of his shows opens.

- According to director Irwin Winkler's DVD commentary, he had considered many actresses for the role of Linda before Ashley Judd's agent said she wanted it; sure her fee would break the budget, he found Judd so keen to play Linda that she lowered her usual asking price.
- Kevin Kline stayed in character as Cole Porter by limiting his vocal range, sang most of his numbers live on set, and played the piano himself in the scenes where Porter plays.
